Goldilocks edit: copy editing

Copy editing is the in-between edit.

This level of editing looks at the consistency of language and style, grammar, spelling, punctuation and accuracy of navigation elements (like contents pages, chapter headings and appendices).

For online documents and websites, a copy edit will check that the links take you where they should, downloads give you the right documents and forms work as they should.

Copy editing doesn’t look at structure and how fit for purpose the document is, but if a document submitted for copy editing looks like it really needs a substantive edit, we’ll let you know. The decision always rests with the author or publisher.
